New Year New Challenges
2009 will be a year full of challenges. Yet, the New Year has brought renewed determination, as we focus on what we need to do to work through them. Yes, times are tough. Yes, it’s likely that the downturn will hit every aspect of the economy. Yes, the effects will be far-reaching.
To survive and even prosper in these times we need to build and maintain trust. Trust with our employees, stakeholders, investors and customers. This is difficult to do alone. We need to recognise that we are stronger together than apart. So we’re looking forward to working together during 2009 - to build a strong sense of connection and renewed purpose between all our different communities.

Leading through the Downturn
Even though there is an economic crisis, the principles of business success remain the same:
- Strategies need to be developed that align current action with the organisation’s purpose
- People need to be clear about what’s needed and energised to make it happen
- Change processes must be integrated and implemented quickly
The difference, and the ultimate test for organisations during these times, is how leaders themselves approach the recession.
How are you going to make the downturn work for you?:
Leadership learning when the challenges are great (but resources are limited...)
The economic climate and global challenges highlight the need for leaders to be resilient and responsive, acting quickly and in alignment across complex global organisations. These all limit the scope to bring people together, create shared understanding, new insights and enable collective action.

Today, private sector organisations are often forced to restructure and integrate operations fast, whether a major financial services organisation is merged or a hi-tech start-up is acquired. In the public sector, there are often intense political pressures to show efficiencies from the merger/reorganisation whilst at the same time improving the customer experience and lifting staff morale.

Almost two-thirds of public sector HR professionals say their department is not equipped to manage change, even though 96% want personal responsibility for facilitating it. Transforming HR & OD
The economic downturn has made HR's role as a strategic business partner centre stage. Supporting organisations towards a low carbon economy
While there has been increasing recognition of CSR and sustainability for organisations, the economic downturn has forced certain issues to the fore. Energy security and climate change are now major strategic issues that need to be urgently addressed. We are in a 20% world with President Obama backing the need for 80% carbon reductions. Projects, Programmes and Organisational Learning
Bath Consultancy Group has been developing a strand of work responding to the growing interest in how organisations create the conditions for success for complex projects and programmes.
"Wembley Stadium, Airbus A380, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the Scottish parliament building, the NHS IT programme..." The headlines are riddled with examples of major projects failing to deliver their benefits to the time, cost, or quality criteria laid out in the key success criteria used in the initiation of the project.
